Dense material may continue moving towards a sump after the first recovery pass. Allowing a settling pause before the final check can reveal another pocket without treating the whole floor as uniformly deep.
Find the pockets that a single sounding misses
Take readings at the sump, low outlets and the sheltered areas behind coils or supports. Compartments with their own openings may need to be measured separately.

Completion is checked at the areas that were restricting capacity, drainage or maintenance access.
Reserve containment for introduced cleaning liquid

Depth, consistency and access shape recovery
Loose sediment, heavy oily bottoms and hardened process residue do not move in the same way. Samples, earlier cleaning records and accessible observations can help estimate whether material can be pumped, vacuumed, loosened or removed in stages. Unknown layers remain separate until the site can identify them. Material that bridges a sump may release unevenly once liquid is removed. The recovery route therefore needs room for a later fall of solids rather than assuming the first pumping stage reveals the final floor condition.
Sludge often collects around sumps, outlets, heating coils and supports. A nominal tank capacity does not show those low points. Areas that were blocking capacity or access
Opening a restricted outlet needs a different check from preparing the floor for inspection. Name the surfaces, fittings or volume that matter. Where residue is adhered rather than settled, hardened residue cleaning may require a separate method review.
Heavy material can continue to drain from coils, supports and wall surfaces after the obvious pool has been removed. Allow time to check those locations and to recover the final liquid rather than judging completion immediately after the first pass. Where the tank has several compartments, state which openings connect to each section and whether material can move between them. Add the available collection volume for the final recovered liquid.
A dated estimate of removed volume also helps the site compare future sludge build-up in the same tank.
