Storage Tank Cleaning

Zero on a storage gauge does not describe the floor. A heel may remain below the outlet, with water or heavier sediment settled underneath and around supports.

Liquid and sediment below the outlet

Floor profile determines what remains after draw-down. Sumps, dished ends and outlets above the lowest point can retain water or sediment that a gauge does not reveal.

Where a tank has several compartments, note whether they share a balance line or need separate draw-down. That affects measurement, temporary storage and the volume expected from each low point.

For a compartmented tank, show which opening and outlet belongs to each section. This prevents one accessible bay being mistaken for the whole vessel.

Where storage residue collects

Read the floor slope, sump and outlet height together. They show where water or sediment can remain beneath the heel and which surfaces are needed for the tank’s next use.

Storage history matters as much as tank size

Storage tanks can appear empty while liquid remains below the draw-off point or settled material covers the floor. Water, scale, product residue and corrosion debris behave differently during recovery. The contractor needs to know how the tank has been filled, emptied and maintained so the cleaning method matches what is likely to remain.

Above-ground and below-ground tanks can also present different access constraints. The available opening, hose route, working surface, nearby traffic and bund arrangement all affect how equipment reaches the vessel and how material leaves it. Safe external photographs and a tank drawing help identify those issues before a visit.

Returning the tank to the same contents may focus the work on recoverable bottoms and usable capacity. Inspection or repair may need more surfaces exposed. Link the quotation to tank inspection preparation when another specialist needs plates, seams, outlets or fittings to be visible.

The route for removed liquid and washings

Introduced cleaning liquid adds to the volume that must be contained. State the available collection capacity and whether free product, water, sludge and debris need separate handling. Where settled solids are the main issue, the sludge removal service explains how recovery can be treated as its own stage.

Final records should show which surfaces and low points were reached, not merely state that the tank was cleaned. Any inaccessible area or unexpected material remains visible for the next decision.

What becomes visible after draw-down

The sequence begins with site control of contents and connections, then moves to residue and the final record.

The storage tank is isolated and drained

The operator controls transfers and confirms that incoming lines cannot refill the vessel.

Separate free liquid from settled material

Recovery follows the agreed order for product, water, sludge and washings instead of combining them into one removal stage.

The agreed finish reflects the next use

Reuse, repair and inspection require different surfaces to be available, so the handback records the relevant areas.

Book inspection or repair access at the right point

For an examination, the contractor can align the work with tank inspection preparation. Entry, where needed, remains subject to specialist isolation, atmosphere, ventilation and rescue planning.

Include the fill and draw-off arrangement in the initial brief. A bottom outlet, floating suction or compartment can leave material in places that are not obvious from the external tank dimensions, so the collection route must reflect the real internal arrangement.

On a flat-bottom storage tank, the gauge may reach zero before the shallow heel and denser sediment have moved. A sloping floor or sump behaves differently. Outlet position and recent draw-down observations therefore provide more useful recovery information than nominal capacity alone.
